�@We discuss  a global version of the Bryant representation 
of constant mean curvature surfaces 
one in the hyperbolic space. 
The associated non-abelian period problem is set 
in the framework of flat unitary vector bundles on Riemann surfaces. 
Using this we prove the existence of surfaces having prescribed global monodromy.
